As per the study fibroids are more prevalent in African American women then other ethnic races. The probability of an African American women to develop fibroids is 3 times then other races. By the age of 40, 20-40% of African American women will have fibroids as per the research.
Estimates show that fibroids will bring on various complications in 50% of the black women by the age of 50, compared to 30% of white women. However in some rare cases, women under the age of 20 also diagnosed with fibroids. Usually fibroids are common in women who are in their 30s or 40s and tend to shrink after the menopause.
The reason as to why black women are more at risk for fibroids is not exactly known; however as per additional research below could be the reasons.
One of the reasons why African American women are more prone to fibroids because they have higher levels of estrogen. Women from other races have comparatively lower levels of estrogen. This higher level of estrogen are directly responsible for the development of fibroids in women. A group predisposed to high estrogen may also be predisposed to fibroids.
Estrogen Dominance Syndrome
Only higher levels of estrogen is not responsible for the development of fibroids in African American women. As per the study deficiency of progesterone (Progesterone is the counter-hormone to estrogen) with higher levels of estrogen also leads to fibroids.
Estrogen Dominance Syndrome (EDS) which is a condition of high estrogen levels and low progesterone levels. EDS may cause heavy periods in younger women. This syndrome commonly occurs in menopausal women where hormone levels are dropping. In this case progesterone levels drop far more rapidly than estrogen levels.
Fibroids and Keloid Scars
There is a strong connection between fibroids and keloid (raised) scars. Both are common in the African American women. It may lead to the formation of excess fibrous connective tissue as part of a reactive or repairing process. In simple words, women who are prone to keloid scars may also be prone to fibroids.
There have been indications that women who use hair relaxers are more prone to fibroids. There is no proven link between Hair Relaxers and Fibroids. But they can cause scalp burns and chemical exposure from these burns may lead to fibroids development.
